Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
There’s something magical about combining two of my favorite things: a serene walk in the Swiss Alps and a heartfelt book to ponder along the way. Join me on a walking review through the enchanting village of Bergün, surrounded by its charming Engadine houses, the majestic Alps and the serene beauty of its snow-covered winter landscape. It was truly a winter wonderland. You can see my stroll in Bergün and hear all about the book over on Instagram.
This book is such a gem! It tells the story of Addie and Louis, two widowed neighbors in a small Colorado town. Addie, feeling the weight of lonely nights, makes a bold suggestion to Louis: spend the nights together—not for romance, but for companionship. It’s an unconventional proposal, especially in their tight-knit community, but it sets the stage for a beautiful and heartfelt connection. Their arrangement starts simple but soon evolves into something deeply meaningful as they share their pasts, joys, and regrets.
Why This Book Stands Out One thing I absolutely loved about Our Souls at Night is how easy it is to read. With just about 200 pages and short chapters, it’s perfect for when you’re in the mood for something quick but still incredibly moving. The conversations between Addie and Louis feel so natural and genuine—they’ll make you smile, reflect, and maybe even shed a tear. The other characters bring so much to the story, too. Addie’s grandson Jamie is just the sweetest, and their bond adds warmth to the narrative. On the flip side, Addie’s son Gene creates a bit of tension with his disapproval, which feels so realistic. Then there’s Louis’s daughter, who adds her own perspective to the mix. These dynamics make the story feel rich and layered.
A Story That Feels Like a Hug Reading this book is like sitting down with an old friend who’s sharing their life with you. Kent Haruf’s writing is simple yet so powerful—it really gets to the heart of what it means to connect with someone. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to seek companionship and live life your way no matter what others might say.
I picked this book up toward the end of last year, hoping for a quick but meaningful read—and it delivered beautifully. Whether you’re looking for a heartfelt story to kick off the new year or just love emotional reads, this is a great pick. And if reading isn’t your thing right now, you can also watch it on Netflix, where it’s beautifully brought to life by Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
