Every time I spotted an Ali Hazelwood book in the library or bookstore, I’d think, “Not for me.” I assumed her books were for twenty-somethings. But recently, during one of our library visits—while my daughters were browsing—I picked up Love on the Brain along with my coffee. By the time my girls were ready to check out, I was already on chapter three. I couldn’t believe I’d waited this long to pick it up!
Plot: Bee Königswasser, a neuroengineer with purple hair and a Marie Curie-inspired motto, has spent years scraping by in academia. When NASA offers her the lead on a dream project, she jumps at the chance—only to co-lead with her former grad school rival, Levi Ward. Though Levi is tall, dark, and undeniably attractive, Bee knows he’s always seen her as an enemy. But as they start working together, Bee notices Levi softening toward her, turning their rivalry into something more. With her career and heart on the line, Bee faces the ultimate question: What will Bee Königswasser do?
My Take:
The slow-burn romance between Bee and Levi completely drew me in. I never imagined I’d enjoy a STEM romance, but this one had me hooked. Yes, it follows a familiar arc—but it works. What won me over was the wit, the clever nods to science (including A LOT OF Marie Curie love), and the sharp Twitter banter. It was funny, sweet, and unexpectedly relatable.
The chemistry between the leads is spot-on, and the side characters—like Bee’s twin sister Reike, Rocio, and Kaylee—bring their own charm to the story. But there are many other characters, and that’s for you to read and discover!
Love on the Brain turned out to be the perfect spring holiday read: light, engaging, and surprisingly thoughtful. As my first Ali Hazelwood book, I’m now curious to see what else she has in store.
